I wasn't expecting to find much online about the mental hospital but I was slightly amazed at the
number and range of sites. These aren't all, but they're the most relevant and/or interesting.
Enjoy.
General information and newspaper articles:
- GazetteNet : The Daily Hampshire Gazette's online news archive has many articles; just do a search for "state hospital" or
"Northampton state hospital". I don't bother linking to specific articles anymore because there are too many and they keep changing their archive links.
- Northampton State Hospital : Great overview, lots of historical background and resources for further research.
Issues connected with the hospital:
- Future for the NSH : an article by Tiffany Brakefield suggesting possible
uses for the site. A bit pointless now, I suppose, but I'll keep it here for historical purposes. Many proposals were made for restoring and reusing the hospital site, but the state waited too long and eventually the buildings were too far gone to repair.
- NSH Burial Site Project : An effort to commemorate those patients who were buried on the grounds.
Personal pages / Other pages with photos:
Defunct pages:
The links in this section will take you to the Internet Archive Project's listings for the site, since the site itself is no longer available.
- Save Old Main : Preservation campaign for the main building. The domain name is now up for grabs.
- Inside Grafton State Hospital is primarily about another abandoned mental hospital in western Massachusetts, but it also has some great interior shots of the NSH and some rooftop photos.
- Northampton State Hospital, by Asaph Murfin, includes pictures taken inside just before the Concert and other background info.
