I wasn't expecting to find much online about the mental hospital but I was slightly amazed at the
number and range of sites. These aren't all, but they're the most relevant and/or interesting.
Enjoy.
General information and newspaper articles:
- GazetteNet : The Daily Hampshire Gazette's online news archive has many articles; just do a search for "state hospital" or
"Northampton state hospital". I don't bother linking to specific articles anymore because there are too many and they keep changing their archive links.
- Northampton State Hospital : Great overview, lots of historical background and resources for further research.
Issues connected with the hospital:
Defunct pages:
The links in this section will take you to the Internet Archive Project's listings for the site, since the site itself is no longer available.
- Save Old Main : Preservation campaign for the main building. The domain name is now up for grabs.
- Inside Grafton State Hospital is primarily about another abandoned mental hospital in western Massachusetts, but it also has some great interior shots of the NSH and some rooftop photos.
- Northampton State Hospital, by Asaph Murfin, includes pictures taken inside just before the Concert and other background info.
Personal pages / Other pages with photos:
- Anna Schuleit was the artist who arranged the concert of
Bach's Magnificat. Her site does have a longish Flash intro.
- Opacity has some stunning photo galleries of the NSH and other abandoned buildings.
- Thedownwardspiral94 put together a photo montage, Leaving Hope, with pictures of several Kirkbride hospitals in Massachusetts.
- Some random person's pix
