People collect coins for many reasons. They may like the designs on the coins for their artistic value. They may also collect them for their monetary value, either because they're rare or made from a precious metal. Others collect coins that have a sentimental value to them. Personally, I like collecting coins because they're tangible history, history you can hold in your hands. Every coin has a story behind it: what the designs mean, what the value of the coin was, why it was made out of the metal it was, why it is or isn't in good shape, etc. Finding out the stories behind a coin can be just as much fun as finding the coins themselves. For world coins in particular I also like looking at the designs themselves, since they represent something unique to the country: a person, an event, a plant, animal, or official seal. The hobby itself is fun because it can be as cheap or expensive, as easy or as difficult as you want it to be. You can also tailor it to your tastes as far as what kinds of coins you collect.
